Pensions and transferring retirement savings to the UAE
A pension is usually the largest asset you carry across a border, and the treatment differs sharply by country. The UAE does not tax personal income, but your home country may tax pension income you receive while you live abroad, and transferring a pension is a decision with lasting consequences.
United Kingdom
- State Pension: entitlement based on your National Insurance record is not lost when you move abroad, but the annual increase is only applied if you live in certain countries. If the UAE is not on the uprated list, your State Pension is frozen at the level when you left — check the current list on gov.uk.
- Private and workplace pensions: you can usually leave them where they are and draw them from abroad. Where a pension is not already flexible, you may be able to transfer it.
- QROPS: transferring a UK pension to an overseas scheme is permitted only to schemes on HMRC's recognised list and may trigger a tax charge if done incorrectly; the rules are set by HMRC and change. Take regulated advice before any transfer.
- Watch out for scams: unsolicited offers to move your pension are a common fraud. Check any adviser is regulated in the UK.
United States
- Social Security: benefits are generally payable abroad; whether payments continue and how they are taxed depends on the specific benefit and the country — check with the Social Security Administration.
- IRAs and 401(k)s: US citizens remain subject to US tax on withdrawals abroad; the UAE does not tax them, but US reporting and possibly state tax still apply.
- Do not move retirement accounts without a US-licensed adviser; the tax cost of an error is usually irreversible.
Other home countries
Australia (Services Australia), Canada (Service Canada) and Ireland each have their own rules on paying pensions abroad and on indexation. Check the rules for your specific pension before you count on it.
Practical points
- Life certificates: many pension providers require periodic proof of life; keep your contact details with them updated.
- Payment abroad: you can normally have a pension paid into a UAE bank account, but exchange-rate cost and fees vary; compare providers.
- Local retirement savings: there is no equivalent of a state pension for expatriates in the UAE; a gratuity from your employer is not a pension.
This is not financial or tax advice. Pension and transfer rules (HMRC QROPS, UK State Pension uprating, US Social Security and exit rules) change; confirm with the authority and a regulated adviser for your case.
