Cyprus Consumers Association finds grocery price gaps of up to 226%
A Cyprus Consumers Association survey conducted on September 30, covering all products and supermarkets participating in e-kalathi, found price gaps of up to 226% for the same items between the cheapest and most expensive stores — an item costing €1 at the cheapest outlet could cost €3.26 at the priciest. In total, 54 items, or 11.3% of those surveyed, showed differences ranging from 100% to 226%. In a separate comparison, fruit and vegetables checked at the farmers market near GSP stadium were on average 26% cheaper than the supermarket averages recorded on the Agriculture Ministry's e-kofini platform. The association also says the government's e-kalathi comparison service needs improvements to make price checking more useful.
For households in Cyprus, comparing prices across supermarkets before the weekly shop can make a substantial difference to the bill; use e-kalathi and the e-kofini farmers-market data, though the association says e-kalathi still needs improvement.
