Gesy to cover Mounjaro for Type II diabetes and adult obesity from Thursday
Cyprus's health insurance organisation has announced that Gesy will cover Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for Type II diabetes and obesity in adults from Thursday, subject to approved protocols. The revised protocol for Ozempic (semaglutide) also takes effect, designating Ozempic as the first-choice treatment for Type II diabetes patients regardless of body weight. For both of the two drugs, a doctor must submit a pre-approval request through the Gesy information system. Mounjaro will initially be available only through state hospital pharmacies, while any pharmacy can issue Ozempic with a prescription, and prescribing is restricted to specialists including endocrinology, specialist pathology and geriatrics, plus designated adult general medicine practitioners.
Patients previously approved for Mounjaro through the relevant committees transfer to the new protocol, and applications already pending before the committee reviewing individual medicine requests do not need to be resubmitted; prescriptions must come from the listed specialists or designated adult general medicine practitioners to secure Gesy coverage.
