Dubai driving lessons need an RTA learning permit, valid for three months
Anyone planning to learn to drive in Dubai must first obtain a learning permit from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which works as a training licence allowing practical lessons at an authorised driving institute. Without it, learners cannot start driving lessons even if they have already passed the theory test, and the RTA states that no driving test appointment can be booked without a valid permit. The permit is valid for three months, and if it expires before lessons are completed and a driver's licence is obtained, it has to be renewed. The 2026 guidance also sets out eligibility criteria, required documents and the approved driving institutes.
Apply for the RTA learning permit before booking any lesson or test, and watch the three-month validity so you renew it in time instead of losing progress.
