Schools in Dubai: British, American, IB and Indian programmes
Dubai has one of the largest concentrations of international schools in the world, and families choose by curriculum, not by country. The main options are British, IB, American and Indian, and the choice usually follows where the family will go next.
Curricula at a glance
| Curriculum | Typical labels | Best for onward move to |
|---|---|---|
| British | IGCSE, A-Level | UK, and widely recognised elsewhere |
| IB | PYP, MYP, IB Diploma | Many countries; a broad, international route |
| American | US diploma, AP | US and Canada |
| Indian | CBSE, ICSE | India and Indian communities; often the largest group in Dubai |
KHDA ratings and fee caps
- Dubai's schools are regulated and inspected by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which publishes ratings that many families use when choosing.
- KHDA also links fee increases to the inspection rating, so fee rises are capped by rule rather than left to each school. The current bands are set annually by KHDA — check the latest.
- A school's KHDA rating and its published fee schedule are the two documents to obtain in writing.
Fees and how they compare with London
Dubai school fees vary widely by curriculum, year group and campus — from lower-cost Indian-curriculum schools to premium British and IB schools. Independent schools in London are also expensive and have risen sharply, so the comparison depends on the specific schools, the year group and the extra costs (registration, uniforms, transport, trips). Compare the full annual cost, and get the fee schedule in writing. We do not publish fixed fees without a source.
Admission cycle
- Popular schools have waiting lists; apply 6 to 12 months ahead, and earlier for sought-after year groups.
- The school year in Dubai typically starts around September; admission windows are set by each school.
- Documents are usually required (previous school reports, transfer certificate); requirements differ per school — ask in advance.
- Check the KHDA rating and the exact fees directly with the school.
Fee caps, ratings and admission dates change year to year (verify for the 2026/27 year). KHDA is authoritative; our figures, when given, are labelled as to-verify.
